Szilvásvárad Forest Railway

The forest railway operates on a 5-km route through the Szalajka Valley. Established in 1908, it originally transported limestone and wood until the 1960s, when it transitioned to passenger services. Its starting station, Fatelep, is located at the valley’s entrance. In spring, the open carriages let passengers enjoy the fresh forest air during the ride. The final station is near the Gloriett clearing, close to the iconic Fátyol Waterfall.

Fátyol Waterfall

The Fátyol Waterfall is one of the valley’s most sought-after attractions. Originating from within the mountains, the water cascades down a 17-metre-long staircase. Fed by the Szikla and Szalajka springs, its flow depends on rainfall. Its stepped design is a rarity in Hungary, making it a unique sight. According to local lore, the waterfall gets its name from its veil-like misty spray.

Natural Wonders

The biggest draw of the Szalajka Valley is undoubtedly its picturesque beauty. The crystal-clear waters of the Szalajka Stream, the lush green forests, and the fresh mountain air create an oasis for those wishing to escape the noise of urban life. The Fátyol Waterfall is particularly famous, where water tumbles down multiple levels, forming a white, veil-like layer over the rocks.

Historical and Cultural Heritage

The valley is not only popular for its natural beauty but also for its rich historical and cultural heritage. The trout lakes here have been renowned for centuries, and the open-air museum offers a glimpse into ancient crafts and traditions. Visitors can explore exhibitions showcasing the valley’s history and admire local folk art.

Hiking Opportunities

The Szalajka Valley is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. Numerous marked trails lead to various parts of the valley, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and forests. The most popular route is the Szalajka Valley Nature Trail, which connects the valley’s main attractions and features interactive boards about the local flora and fauna.

Millennium Lookout Tower

The Millennium Lookout Tower offers an unparalleled panorama of the Bükk Mountains. On clear days, you can even spot the peaks of the High Tatras!

Szalajka Stream

The Szalajka Stream originates at an altitude of 450 metres and has a catchment area of approximately 10 square kilometres. Its waters are ideal for fast-flowing fish like trout, which have been native here for over a century. For trout farming, the stream has been dammed at several points to create artificial pools. Locally prepared trout, either smoked or grilled, is a speciality of the area.

Open-Air Forest Museum

Keen-eyed visitors can discover the Forest Museum during their walk through the valley. This museum showcases ancient crafts of the Bükk region, such as timber cutting, lime and charcoal burning, shingle making, resin extraction, and soap-making, using period tools.

Sustainability in the Szalajka Valley

In recent years, increased efforts have been made to ensure the valley’s sustainable tourism. Local authorities and organisations have implemented measures to protect its natural environment while offering a comfortable and enriching experience for visitors. Thanks to these efforts, the Szalajka Valley has retained its original charm and natural value.

Getting There

Visitors arriving by car must park at the lot at the valley’s entrance, as the green zone is closed to vehicles. Szilvásvárad is easily accessible by public transport, with bus and train connections available. A direct train from Eger to Szilvásvárad passes through Szarvaskő.
