Zalakaros: One of Hungary’s Most Popular Spa Towns

Zalakaros, located between Keszthely and Nagykanizsa in Zala County, is one of Hungary’s most popular spa destinations. The internationally recognized Zalakarosi Bath offers active relaxation for people of all ages, from children and parents to grandparents and couples.

In 2019, the Zalakarosi Bath won third place at the Szallas.hu Tourism Attraction of the Year Gala in the Quality Award category. In 2024, it once again won the Value and Quality Grand Prize and received the Environmental Protection Excellence Award for “Energy Innovation in the Use of Zalakaros Thermal Water.”

Thermal Water

Thermal water was discovered in the area in 1962, emerging from a depth of 2,000 meters. This unique therapeutic water has a rare composition found nowhere else in Europe: it is alkaline-chloride and bicarbonate-rich, containing significant amounts of iodine, bromine, sulfur, and fluoride.

Additional elements include potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron, manganese, metaboric acid, metasilicic acid, and free carbon dioxide. Thermal water is sourced from two wells, drilled into the Upper Pannon layer, which ensures sodium chloride and bicarbonate-rich water.

Medical Services

Guests with medical referrals can access a wide range of rheumatological and therapeutic treatments without the need for an appointment or long waits, based on their health conditions. The minerals in the thermal water have beneficial effects on various organs, helping alleviate inflammatory diseases, musculoskeletal issues, and circulatory problems.

During bathing, minerals are absorbed through inhalation and the skin, entering the bloodstream and tissues, strengthening cartilage and blood vessel walls.

With over five decades of experience, Zalakarosi Bath offers a variety of therapeutic treatments, including pool baths, tub baths, weight baths, carbonic baths, mud packs, medical massages, hydro-massages, and underwater group physiotherapy. Spacious rest areas and shaded parks ensure a peaceful and relaxing environment.

Services

The family-friendly spa and adventure pool offer plenty of entertainment. Outdoor and indoor children’s pools, slides, and water games provide endless adventures where fun knows no bounds. Kids can also enjoy a playhouse and various animation programs and competitions.

For thrill-seekers, the 400-meter-long Adrenaline Slide Park offers unforgettable experiences, where guests over 12 can test their courage, racing at speeds of up to 70 km/h.

Dining Options

The bath’s gastronomy offerings are plentiful, with visitors able to enjoy services at the restaurants throughout the year. Behán Gastro Bistro offers Zala specialties, à la carte dishes, and daily menu options. Üvegtigris Buffet, a family-friendly restaurant, serves kids’ favorites and a cocktail bar during the summer months.

Cezar Winery shop and café offer premium wines from the Zala wine region, along with coffee, fresh juices, sandwiches, and sweets. The bath’s café and lottery stand are located at the main entrance, where guests can enjoy the view with a coffee or soft drink on the terrace.

During the summer season, ice cream parlours, cafés, snack bars, and restaurants are available, serving langos, meat dishes, cotton candy, donuts, strudel, and a range of soft drinks, lemonades, and alcoholic beverages.

Access

For those using public transport, the bus stop is right in front of the bath’s entrance. Visitors arriving by car can park in the designated area next to the building on Üdülő Street.
