The History of Puskas Arena

On 20 August 1953, the opening of the People’s Stadium (Népstadion), with a planned capacity of 78,000 seats, marked the triumphant close of Hungary’s first five-year plan under the Rákosi era. However, in reality, the seating capacity fell short of 69,000. Nevertheless, this did not deter the socialist leadership’s dream of hosting the 1960 Olympics in Hungary.

That dream never came to fruition, and over time, the People’s Stadium fell into decline, reflecting the fading glory of Hungarian sports. In 2002, it was renamed Puskás Ferenc Stadium, and by 2011, the government decided to build a world-class facility. After eight years, 130,000 cubic metres of concrete, and a budget of 190 billion forints, the inauguration took place, crowned by a friendly match between Hungary and Uruguay.

Facilities

The stadium, meeting UEFA Category IV standards, has a capacity of 67,000 for football matches and 78,000 for concerts. The VIP area accommodates 4,000 guests, featuring 80 skyboxes and 4 sky clubs. Accessibility is enhanced by 27 elevators for individuals with reduced mobility.

Entry is facilitated through QR code scanners, complemented by a state-of-the-art facial recognition camera system for security. The venue also boasts modern LED lighting, while the natural grass on the field is reinforced with synthetic fibres for added durability.

Dining Options

During events, 80 kiosks operate to ensure smooth service for attendees. Drinks and fast food are available on the lower and upper levels, while sandwiches, popcorn, and pretzels can be found on the middle level. Beer is served in reusable cups as part of a sustainable system.

Please note that the stadium operates on a cashless basis. Payments can only be made using contactless bank cards, HelloPay cards, or smartphones.

Smoking Policy

Smoking is prohibited on the premises, except in designated areas (near pylons, staircases, and turnstiles).

Getting to Puskas Arena

The entrances to Puskás Aréna can be accessed from Dózsa György Road or Stefánia Road. During matches or major events, public transportation is highly recommended, as there are only 556 parking spaces available. The M2 and M4 metro lines, along with tram line 1, offer increased frequency during events. The Puskás Ferenc Stadion and Keleti Railway Station stops are within walking distance of the venue.
