Hungarian State Opera House – Budapest

The Hungarian State Opera House is Hungary’s only theatre dedicated exclusively to operas and ballets. Its building is one of the most outstanding 19th-century landmarks in Budapest, designed by Hungary’s renowned architect Miklós Ybl in a neo-Renaissance style. The grand opening took place on 27 September 1884, in the presence of Franz Joseph I, then King of Hungary. The inaugural performance featured the first act of Bánk bán, the overture of Hunyadi László, and the first act of Lohengrin, conducted by Ferenc Erkel.

In addition to its performances, the Opera House is open for guided tours twice daily.
