Electrotechnical Collection, Budapest

The Electrotechnical Collection Budapest offers a rich and comprehensive exhibition exploring the history and evolution of light and illumination, as well as their societal and cultural impact. Located in a striking Bauhaus-style building on Kazinczy Street, originally a transformer station, the venue is adorned with Art Deco stone floors and green-glazed Zsolnay tiles. Its historic architectural charm makes it a fitting home for the achievements of Hungary’s greatest electrotechnical figures and their inventions.

Exhibitions

Visitors can explore the development of electrotechnics through eight permanent exhibitions across four rooms. The museum highlights Hungary’s pioneering role in railway electrification, lighting technology, and transformer manufacturing. It also showcases a unique collection of electrotechnical devices and instruments, some over 100 years old, all presented in working condition.

Interactive exhibits include:

  • An influence machine demonstration
  • Hand-cranked dynamo for generating electricity
  • A replica of Ányos Jedlik’s “lightning stretcher,” a voltage multiplier capacitor array

In the museum’s cozy courtyard, the Neon Parade exhibition is a standout feature. The artistic neon signs on display are both cultural relics and creative masterpieces. Iconic pieces include the “Patyolat” white swan symbolizing cleanliness, the “Csemege” basket, the blinking-eyed owl of an antiquarian bookshop, and the “Mignon” sign from a Károly Boulevard confectionery. These neon lights create a magical atmosphere during evening events.
