Like many other notable buildings in Budapest, the Parliament was constructed to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest. A total of 19 designs were submitted by prominent architects for the permanent Parliament building competition, and the jury selected the design by Imre Steindl. The construction took place between 1885 and 1904 and required an astonishing amount of building materials: half a million precious stones, 40 million bricks, and 40 kilograms of pure gold were used to complete the building’s grandeur. Its architectural style is strongly influenced by the Viennese Neo-Gothic trend, but it blends eclectic uniqueness with baroque decoration.
Crown Jewels in the Parlament in Budapest
The Parliament houses Hungary’s most significant historical treasures, the Holy Crown, the Scepter, and the Royal Orb, which are protected in an earthquake-resistant display case in the dome hall. The crown, with its adventurous history, was ceremonially transferred from the Hungarian National Museum to the Parliament.

A poignant memorial is found at the In Memoriam 1956. October 25th exhibition, where visitors can pay their respects to the victims of the Kossuth Square shootings.
