Miskolctapolca Cave Bath
Due to a regrettable fire incident on 6th September 2024, the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath will remain closed indefinitely.

A Unique European Attraction

The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, open all year round, offers a breathtaking and unparalleled experience on a European scale. What makes this place special is that visitors can enjoy aquatic relaxation in natural passages formed hundreds of thousands of years ago. With a variety of wellness services, pleasant thermal water, a healing cave climate, and themed pools, it caters to bathing enthusiasts in all seasons.

History

Tapolca has played a significant role in the life of Miskolc since the Middle Ages. The healing properties of the thermal water were first highlighted by a local abbot, who verified its miraculous powers with doctors from Košice in 1711. Documents from 30 years later already contain descriptions of the baths, but the area only became a popular resort in the 1920s and 1930s.

The immense success and the potential of the cave passages encouraged the town to build a new bath palace. Construction lasted about three years, and the cave bath was inaugurated in 1959. Ten years later, the iconic Shell Pool was added. Today, the facility boasts a Sauna Park and a total of 13 pools—6 outdoor and 7 indoor.

Cave Bath

The cave passages of Miskolctapolca’s bathing world are open year-round for those seeking relaxation. In two thermal pools with a temperature of 33-35°C, surrounded by ancient limestone walls, visitors can unwind from the stresses of daily life. The Roman Hall evokes the experience of ancient communal baths, while the 32°C Star Room gives the impression of swimming under the open sky. Guests can also use the Old Cave Pool, the Bath Hall, and the Arch Room.

Thermal Water

The warm karst water emerging from the heart of the mountain benefits both body and soul. As its salt content is less than 1,000 mg/l, there is no time limit for bathing. Its significant calcium, magnesium, potassium, bicarbonate, and sulphate content makes it a remedy for joint diseases.

Outdoor Pools

In summer, the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath expands with a nearly 3.6-hectare landscaped beach and six additional pools. The area is wheelchair accessible, ensuring comfort for visitors with reduced mobility. For younger guests, three children’s pools are available. The Lake Bath, enhanced with adventure features, and the iconic Shell Pool provide relaxation for those seeking a tranquil retreat.

Sauna Park

The Sauna Park offers diverse wellness services, including three lava stone Finnish saunas, one steam cabin, and three infrared saunas. Showers, a plunge pool, and relaxation loungers further enhance the experience. A separate ticket is required to access this wellness section.

Dining Options

Visitors to the Thermal Cave don’t have to leave for lunch, as the Thermal Restaurant serves freshly prepared Hungarian and international delicacies throughout the year. Groups of up to 30 people can also be catered for. During summer, a fried dough stall, ice cream parlour, and the Tüske Bar are open.

Getting There

The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath can be reached from Budapest via Route 3 or the M3 motorway, and from the direction of Tokaj via Route 37. Travellers arriving by train can take tram lines 1, 1A, or 2 from the railway station to Szinvapark, where they must switch to bus lines 2 or 20. The journey takes about 20 minutes, and the bath’s entrance is just a 200-metre walk from the final stop.
