Rózsák tere, located in Budapest’s District VII (Erzsébetváros), lies near Rottenbiller Street, between Dohány Street and Rákóczi Road. Beginning in the 18th century, the area hosted a livestock market, referred to in German as Viehmarkt. In 1873, during the district’s development, the square was renamed Baromvásár tér (Cattle Market Square) as a translation of its German name. Later, in 1878, it became Szegényház tér (Poorhouse Square), named after a nearby charitable institution built two decades earlier.
In the 1870s, the surrounding plots were parceled out, with many being donated for social and religious purposes. The square received its current name in 1932, on the 700th anniversary of the death of Saint Elizabeth of the House of Árpád.
