Zugliget Chairlift – Budapest (Libegő)

Hop on one of Budapest’s most unique means of transport! The Zugliget Chairlift promises an unforgettable journey for city explorers every day of the week. Its track stretches over 1,000 metres, conquering an elevation difference of 262 metres. Along the way, visitors are enchanted by the picturesque scenery of the hiking spots around János Hill.


Opening Hours

The Zugliget Chairlift operates year-round, closing only on maintenance days, typically on Mondays of even-numbered weeks. However, it remains open on public holidays and weekends.


Key Information

  • Duration: The entire trip takes around 12 minutes, during which passengers glide approximately 5–8 metres above the ground.
  • Capacity: 102 suspended chairs travel along the cableway.
  • Pets: Dogs and other small animals are allowed only in carry bags with a full-price ticket.

  • On the way up: The view features private gardens, charming streets, and natural landmarks like Fairy Rock and Hermit Head Rock.

History

The chairlift began its journey on 20 August 1970, fulfilling a dream conceived as early as the 1930s. It provided a quicker and more convenient way for city residents to reach the tranquil forested hiking areas. Over 50 years later, it remains a cherished landmark, creating lifelong memories for countless visitors.


Getting There

  • Public Transport: The 291 bus terminates at Zugliget, right by the chairlift. (From Széll Kálmán tér M2 metro line)
  • Car: Free parking is available at Normafa, with a 30-minute forest walk leading to the upper station.
