The Római-part, (Roman Shore) stretching along Óbuda, was a popular spot for water activities in Budapest during the 19th and 20th centuries. The clean waters of the Danube provided opportunities for swimming, sports, and recreation, and boathouses and eateries were built along the shoreline. In 1973, public beaches were closed due to a decline in water quality. Interest in water sports diminished, and after the change of regime, the boathouses and corporate resorts also shut down.
In recent years, the Római-part has regained popularity, although there are still no designated swimming areas. The stretch of riverbank is an ideal place for sports. Water sports enthusiasts can rent boats, kayaks, or canoes, and the area is also a favourite spot for runners and cyclists. On sunny days, the sandy beach volleyball and pétanque courts also attract visitors.
The area is family-friendly, making it an ideal place for family programmes and outings. The eateries offer a true retro gastronomic experience, and walking past the snack bars, you can smell the fried fish and garlic-flavoured langos from afar. The excellent riverside restaurants and kiosks are also famous for their lively entertainment venues. The Római-part is popular with dog owners too, with pets welcome everywhere.
The waterfront can be reached by car from the Szentendrei road towards the Danube, or by public transport via the suburban railway (HÉV) and bus. 1031 Budapest, Római part (Hungary).
