History
The first written mention of the church is found in a document from 1247, leading researchers to estimate its construction in the mid-13th century.By 1309, it had gained enough prestige to host the coronation of Charles I of Hungary (Charles Robert). Its national significance grew following King Sigismund’s 1412 Venetian campaign when the victorious ruler hung the battle flag on the church’s walls upon his return.
King Matthias chose the Church of Our Lady for a thanksgiving Mass after his coronation and later held both of his weddings there.
The Ottoman occupation caused severe damage to the entire Castle District, and the Matthias Church served as a mosque until Buda was recaptured. In the early 18th century, the church was handed over to the Jesuit order and, following 1773, came under the city’s jurisdiction. Noble families built burial chapels beneath the sanctuary, and in 1916, it hosted the last coronation of a Hungarian king. The church suffered heavy damage during World War II. A pivotal moment in its history was when Saint John Paul II visited Hungary and prayed within its walls.

The western façade features a richly decorated portal with medieval carvings and an exquisite rose window. The dates of the building’s renovations are inscribed in the Gothic-style gable above. Adjacent to the entrance rises the nearly 80-meter-tall Matthias Tower, which can be reached by climbing 197 steps.
Inside, the church contains seven smaller chapels, each adorned with intricate decorations. Its elongated sanctuary houses a Neo-Gothic main altar dedicated to Mary. Behind the altar, two rows of stained-glass windows depict scenes and figures associated with Hungarian coronation ceremonies.
